Apple updated the firmware for iPhone and iPod touch to 3.1.3 which fixed the app crash issues and also enhanced the accuracy of battery level display. The firmware 3.1.3 do not contain any major updates but for those who have updated and now want to jailbreak their iPhone or iPod touch, follow this guide:

Jailbreak will only work for:

  • iPhone 2G
  • iPod touch 2G and 1G (non MC and older version)
(You can check whether your iPod is MC or not by going to Settings –> General –> About and see if your Model number starts with MC)

If you have iPod touch 3G newer model then wait for any further updates and DO NOT upgrade to firmware 3.1.3 if you have already jailbroken your 3.1.2 firmware!

The procedure is pretty simple:

Requirements:

  • Download and install Redsn0w 0.9.4 for Windows or Mac
  • Download and install the latest iTunes 9.0.3 for Windows/Mac

Procedure:

1) Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to Computer. iTunes will open and pop you for Downloading to the new firmware. Click “Download and Install”. Download and Installation will take some time since it’s 257MB file.

2) Open redsn0w 0.9.4 and browse to firmware 3.1.2 (do not select firmware 3.1.3 that you just downloaded because redsn0w still does not recognize it)
Your firmware updates are located in:
C:/ Users{your windows user name} / AppData / Roaming / Apple Computer / iTunes / iPod Software Updates

3) Now select “Install Cydia”. After selecting make sure you follow these steps:

  • Your device must be connected to the PC/MAC and should also be powered off.
  • Click “Next”
  • Now press and hold the power button and Home button simultaneously. Release the power button after a while but keep holding Home button until installation starts.

4) That’s all you have to do! RedSn0w will do the installation and your iPod touch will get rebooted and the jailbroken firmware 3.1.3!
