I tried this procedure, but it didn't work for me. At first it appeared that my iPhone was syncing with Outlook, but somehow not reflecting updates I made via Outlook. After troubleshooting a bit, I tried resetting the sync history in iTunes and selecting "replace info on this iPhone". The next sync caused all the Contacts on my iPhone to disappear.
