We have already posted a complete step-by-step guide on how to do untethered jailbreak of your iPod touch 2G/3G running any firmware. For those who do not know, untethered jailbreak means that you just have to jailbreak once and it will not be wiped off until you restore your iPhone. Up until now, all the jailbreak tools did tethered jailbreak which meant you have to jailbreak every time you rebooted or restarted your iPod touch.

You have tethered jailbroken iPod touch 2G/3G running firmware 3.1.3 or older? You need to update it using this tutorial before you can do untethered jailbreak using Spirit.

I am using iPod touch 3G (MC) model which is jailbroken using Blackra1n by Geohot and is running on firmware 3.1.2. I will show you how to restore and upgrade to the latest firmware 3.1.3 and then how to do untethered jailbreak using Spirit.

Step 1:

Make sure you have latest iTunes installed. If not, download from here.

Connect your iPod touch to your computer. iTunes will open up and you will see this dialog box:

Note: You might see “Download and Install” button instead of just “Install”. Click that button if you see it.

Step 2:

It will take approximately for 5 minutes for iTunes do restore your tethered jailbroken iPod touch to the latest firmware 3.1.3

You will see this dialog box during the restore process:
restore-ipod

And once the Restore process is complete. You iPod will be restarted and you will see this dialog box:
restore_ipod_touch

You have successfully restored your iPod touch to the latest firmware 3.1.3
