How to SEO your Wordpress Blog

by Salman Ul Haq on September 13, 2008

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) plugins are in great demand nowadays. Because of their ease of use and automated handling of all the complex SEO work itself, these plugins are the best way to market and spread your blog. Since high ranking on the leading search engines like Google, Live and Yahoo etc means instant and quality traffic and which in turn could be cashed easily :)
We have been thinking of sharing how easy it is to Optimize your Wordpress blog with a very popular plugin but sadly, scores of bloggers find it quite difficult to add and activate this plugin and manage its settings. So this is the guide for those folks out there.

What You Need:

1)?All in one SEO pack Plugin + Google Sitemap Generator Plugin
2) A Wordpress Blog

Now do the following:

1) Click on the links to download the plugins
2) Unzip them and upload them into your “wp-content/plugins” directory.
3) Now goto your “Wordpress Dashboard > Plugins” page and Activate both plugins

4) Once plugins are activated, Goto “Settings > XML Sitemap” page and check all the boxes under the heading “Sitemap Content”

An XML Sitemap is a kind of file that contains all of your blogs data in a structured tagged format.

5) Now?create a blank “sitemap.xml” and “sitemap.xml.gz” file. If you cant do that then download sitemap.xml from here and sitemap.xml.gz from here and upload them onto your wordpress root directory (eg. My Wordpress is installed in http://www.programmerfish.com/test/ directory, so I place sitemap.xml in test directory).

Make sure you make both the files writable

6) Once uploaded and writable, goto “Settings > XML Sitemap” page and click on link “rebuild the sitemap” under the status heading

Bravo! You just generated your blog’s sitemap. Now all search engines can feed on it!

Last Step: Goto “Settings > All in one SEO” page and type in the information about your blog there (Blog Title, description, tags etc) and Update it.

[All in one SEO settings page]

Thats it! Phew ;)

If you followed all the steps then the next time you write a new post on your blog, you must see the following tab on the “Wordpress > Write” page

So whenever you write a new post, Copy+paste its title, description and tags into the All in one SEO fields as shown in the above image.

Any queries? Post your comments on here and I will write back :)

Wordpress is a great blogging platform and getting it search engine optimized really isn’t a hard task. Using proper permalinks and robots.txt file to prevent duplicate content and a few other methods can really make a difference. The All in One SEO plugin is really the best bet.

Hey!, I read this post titled “SEO your Wordpress Blog | ProgrammerFish” about a week ago, might have been last Saturday, and thought it was a good point. I’ve been trying for the last few days to find your site again but ended up finding it in Google using the keywords “seo”. Anyway, I’ve forgotten what I wanted to post last week but I will be returning regularly. Bookmarked the page.

Great article with visual guides and easy to implement.
Hovewer I doubt if you need to retype “Title” in the All In One Seo Pack field because I think title is already taken into meta tags from the original title field.

@ Invest1gator

Well it is like if you want title of the page different then title of post then you should re-type the title. It is good to have comprehensive page title for SEO.
